Grassbaugh Earns Endorsement from Mansfield NewsJournal

In an editorial today, the Mansfield NewsJournal told readers to “vote for the Democrat in the 90th District,” Duane Grassbaugh. Impressed by Grassbaugh’s knowledge and effort to talk with township officials in the 90th District, the NewsJournal noted that “(Grassbaugh) believes relationships he has built in the community are more important in achieving common goals.”  The newspaper cited several reasons for selecting Grassbaugh over Republican candidate Margaret Ann Ruhl, including this:

We like Grassbaugh’s youthful energy and commitment to work with other government officials and citizens to build a sustainable economy on the district’s natural resources foundation. That this is his third run for office — after 2004 and 2006 — tells us that he’s been thinking about district issues for a while and didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to seek public office because it was a slow day in the dairy barn.

Grassbaugh has, indeed, taken a serious grassroots approach to campaigning in 2008.  When he isn’t working on his 1,200-acre dairy farm, he is knocking on doors, canvassing throughout Knox, Ashland, Richland, and Morrow counties. He has also talked with all 46 townships in the district.

In their endorsement, the NewsJournal’s editors concluded, “Grassbaugh is better equipped to serve the district’s rural constituents.”

Duane Grassbaugh Completes 46-Township Tour

In his bid to become the State Representative for the 90th District, Democratic candidate Duane Grassbaugh recently completed a series of visits to all 46 townships in the district. Embarking on this unprecedented “fact-finding marathon,” Grassbaugh thought it important to talk about the issues at the most basic level of government: the townships.

Indeed, the general consensus among township officials is that it’s important for state officials to be aware of what is happening at the grass-root level of government. Many township officials noted this was the first time in their memories that someone running for a state legislature position visited one of their meetings.  Debbie Mcllvoy, a trustee in Monroe Township, Knox County, was impressed that Grassbaugh was accomplishing a mission made all the more difficult because many of the townships meet on the same evening. “Duane was one of the few, if not the only one, who stayed through the entire meeting. This displayed to me a sincere interest in what is occurring at the local township level.”

Roger McConnell, a Miller Township, Knox County trustee, said, “Grassbaugh is more involved in being aware of the importance of local government and more involved in a hands-on approach.”

There is a concern about the passage of legislation ( Bill 521) which would do away with township governance. Deana Detwiler, fiscal officer of Canaan Township in Morrow County added, “Duane Grassbaugh is staying up on the status of Bill 521 and the workings of the 15-person committee (that) will be appointed to study and evaluate the effectiveness of lower levels of local governance. He made it clear to us that if elected, he would be very vocal about the importance of township government.”

In Grassbaugh’s discussions with township officials he was able to ascertain the needs of various areas within the 90th District. Concerns about the budget, health care, energy and school funding are felt in both urban and rural townships. After his visits Grassbaugh said, “It is clear to me that each township often has unique problems but a constant to all is that they would benefit from attention at the state level.”

Grassbaugh Receives “A” Rating from the NRA

Duane Grassbaugh officially received an A rating from the National Rifle Association this week.  According to the NRA’s web site, an A rating means that the candidate is “solidly pro-gun…(and has) expressed strong support for NRA positions on Second Amendment issues.” Coming from a family of hunters, Duane is proud of this designation.  In contrast, his opponent received a D rating for her position on the Second Amendment.
